The WPA Awards 2018 for wood protection excellence



Now in their fourth year the WPA Awards for wood protection excellence provide a showcase for the timber treatment industry and the vital role wood protection has to play in helping to make the most of wood. They also recognise achievements in areas that are vital to business success like innovation, marketing and customer service.

This blog is your guide to the 2018 Award Categories and the sponsors without whose support the staging of these Awards and the very popular presentation evening and networking event on 11 April at Marriott Breadsall Priory Hotel, Derby, would not be possible. There is an Entry Form for each Award category. These can be found on the WPA website A business may enter as many categories as they wish except for the ‘Treatment Quality Award’ where the nominations come from WPA Benchmark QAS auditor

About each Award category

Wood Protection Project of the Year Award

This Award is for projects that demonstrate the use of preservative pre-treated wood or modified wood to deliver the durability essential to the long term performance of a structure in the UK and Ireland. Projects may be a whole building, part of a building exterior or interior, an outdoor timber engineering structure or a landscaping scheme.

Flame Retardant Wood Project Award

The importance of effective flame retardant treated wood has never been higher. This Award category is a great opportunity to raise awareness about the use of quality, factory applied FR products and processes that fulfil current Building Regulations and the Construction Products Regulations.

Award for Treatment Quality Excellence

This Award is for those businesses producing wood or wood based panel products under one of the WPA’s three quality schemes: the WPA Benchmark scheme for preservative pre-treated wood; the WPA Benchmark FR scheme for flame retardant pre-treatments o the WPA FR Build scheme for timber frame components. Nominations for this Award are made exclusively by WPA quality scheme auditors.

Excellence in Marketing Treated Wood

This is a new Award category for 2018 intended to recognise marketing and communications excellence in selling and promoting treated wood and/or in helping to raise awareness about the correct specification and use of treated wood with buyers. The Award is open to treaters, suppliers and communications agencies and covers campaigns in the media, online e-marketing, website development, social media initaitives, point of sale promotion, customer newsletters and PR.

Treated Wood Innovation Award

Another new award category this year to highlight innovation in our industry and the development and application of better solutions; more effective treatment products, processes, technologies or services to meet existing market needs, new requirements or standards of performance.  

Treated Wood Trader of the Year 

This Award is all about customer service excellence. Entry is open any business that produces, distributes or markets pre-treated wood or wood based panels for use in the UK and Ireland. Applicants should focus on what differentiates them from other suppliers of treated wood and helps retain and build customer loyalty.

Judging panel

A judging panel comprising of Ed Suttie from BRE, TTJ Magazine editor Stephen Powney and WPA Director Steve Young will make the final decision on the winner in each category.

Announcement of winners at the WPA annual dinner

The winners of the 2018 Awards will be announced at a celebratory reception and dinner on Wednesday 11 April at the Marriott Breadsall Priory Hotel, Derby. This popular networking event preceeds the WPA Making the Most of Wood Conference that takes place the following day.
